Presentation:
Julie Sheppard and Sharon Heise, representing the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition in Pensacola, will discuss some of the Institute's research projects, and the business side of the Institute, including its start-up and technology transfer issues.
IHMC is a not-for-profit research institute of the Florida University System and is affiliated with several Florida universities. Researchers at IHMC pioneer technologies aimed at leveraging and extending human capabilities. Current active research areas include: knowledge modeling and sharing, adjustable autonomy, robotics, advanced interfaces and displays, communication and collaboration, computer-mediated learning systems, intelligent data understanding, software agents, expertise studies, work practice simulation, knowledge representation, and other related areas. Speakers
Julie Sheppard serves as General Counsel and Special Assistant to the Director at IHMC. Formerly she was Associate General Counsel at the University of North Florida and served as the General Counsel at the University of West Florida from 1997 through 2002. Prior experience includes working as Counsel to the Florida Board of Regents Office of Human Resources and Labor Relations; Administrative Hearings Officer to the Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security; Associate Attorney, Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer and Nelson, Portland, Maine; and Law Clerk to The Honorable Robert V. Cauchon, Justice of the Massachusetts Trial Courts-Land Court Department. Julie earned her Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School and her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia. Julie is admitted to practice in Florida, Maine, and Massachusetts.
Dr. Sharon Heise is Associate Director for the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. Dr Heise previously served 20 years in the United States Air Force, where she was most recently Director of the Mathematics and Information Sciences Directorate at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). At AFOSR, Dr Heise also managed the U.S. Air Force basic research portfolio in Dynamics and Control. Prior to joining AFOSR, Dr Heise managed programs in the Information Exploitation, Information Technology, Information Systems and Tactical Technology Offices of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. She has also served in the National Reconnaissance Office's Advanced Systems and Technology Directorate, on the Aeronautics & Astronautics faculty of the Air Force Institute of Technology, and at the Air Vehicles Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory. Dr Heise holds the Ph.D. degree in Control Engineering from Cambridge University, England. She is an associate fellow of the AIAA and a senior member of the IEEE.
