PENSACOLA, FL – ITGulfCoast, an Information Technology Association for the Gulf Coast, will hold their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at PJC Downtown. Diane Davis, a system adminstrator for Advantage Credit, will discuss Remote User Security.

      Presentation Abstract

More employers and employees are taking advantage of working from home. For some it saves money, for others it increases productivity. In either case, having users connect remotely to your network can create unique security issues. Securing the network while providing appropriate and necessary access to network resources is a fundamental task of today’s IT administrators. Most organizations protect internal user workstations however most home computers are typically only protected by personal firewalls, if at all.

Securing the network can often include new policies and procedures for remote users. Utilizing assets such as remote desktop, terminal services, VPN and tools such as login scripts and/or Group Policy in Windows will assist in keeping your network safe.

Diane’s presentation will discuss some of the potential security risks and threats when remote users connect to your network. She will discuss potential threats the steps that System Administrators can take do to find weaknesses in your system and go over a checklist of security safeguards to be sure you've got your remote systems locked down. Topics include types of threats, remote security policies and security checklists - firewalls, malware protection, file share permissions, patch policies, password policies, null session connections, VPN, terminal services, wireless devices and IM.

Diane Davis is a contract instructor with New Horizons since 2007. She earned her BS degree in Accounting, with a minor in engineering, from Oregon State University in 1993. Once a student for New Horizons, she has developed her skills and returned as an instructor.  Before diving into the corporate world Diane was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and was responsible for the training and education of non-infantry personnel.
