      Technology Trends in the Legal Industry

      Garrett P. LaBorde, attorney and legal technology consultant with the consulting group, Law Office Technology (www.lawot.com) will be the presenter at the monthly ITGulfcoast meeting on September 23, 2009. Area IT professionals are encouraged to participate in this lunch & learn format.

      The presentation will focus on the use of technology in the legal industry and in the modern law office. Trends and topics discussed will include: How are lawyers going “paperless”? What is a virtual law practice (VLP)? What technologies are being leveraged to become more practice centric and less location centric? What unique ways are lawyers using remote access tools to remain constantly connected to their office and their clients’ issues? Which “ahead of the curve” tools are some lawyers using to increase efficiency? (Document Assembly; Document Imaging & Management; Extranets, Sharepoint & collaboration sites; Software as a Service & other cloud computing concepts. Finally, there will be an informal report on interesting caselaw relating to technology.

      Speaker Bio

      Garrett P. LaBorde obtained his B.S. from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette in 1998 with minors in Electrical Engineering, English & Political Science. In 2001, he earned his Juris Doctorate from the Mississippi College School of Law. His post-graduate honors include serving as distinguished intern to U.S. District Judge John M. Shaw ( Chief, W.D. of Louisiana) and intern to the Mississippi Attorney General, where he was admitted to the Mississippi Bar. Mr. LaBorde was then admitted to the Louisiana Bar in 2002 whereupon he established and maintained zealous law practices in Shreveport and Lafayette, Louisiana.

      Mr. LaBorde is a proud member of the American Bar Association (ABA), its Law Practice Management and Litigation Sections, the ABA House of Delegates, the Louisiana State Bar Association (LSBA), its House of Delegates, Bar Journal Editorial Staff and a standing member of its Practice Assistance and Improvement Committee and Medical-Legal Inter-professional Committee.

      Throughout his career, Mr. LaBorde has combined his undergraduate training in Electrical and Computer Engineering and his passion and knowledge for the law to promote the robust and efficient delivery of legal services to his clients and to partner firms who seek to do the same. His unique perspective as a Louisiana practicing attorney and legal technologist with Law Office Technology has afforded him powerful insight and a strong awareness of how to leverage modern software and hardware in reaching the strategic goals of increased efficiency and superior matter management.

      Meeting Details

      This meeting will be held at the Gulf Coast Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (fomerly PJC Downtown Campus) on the 4th floor. The meeting starts at 11:30 am and ends at 1:00 pm. The cost for lunch is $12 per person. Cold box lunches will be provided. The fee to attend without lunch is $5 per person.
