ITGULFCOAST Awards $3,000 in Scholarships
ITGULFCOAST recently awarded three $1,000 scholarships to local college students attending UWF and PJC.
ITGULFCOAST presented its annual scholarship awards at their January meeting on January 27, 2010. This year the non-profit group was able to give away $3000 to local students enrolled in technology programs and PJC and UWF.
The students are chosen by their respective colleges once the school is notified of the amount to be distributed. Students are chosen basd on their academics and personal achievements.
The scholarships were presented by ITGULFCOAST Director Patrick Rooney to Salina Hall and George Goehring.
Salina Hall was presented her award by Patrick Rooney and Dr. Bob Hoyt, Medical Informatics professor at UWF. Salina is currently attending the University of West Florida in pursuit of her BS in Health Sciences with a concentration in Medical Information Technologies. She has an AS degree in Radiography and a Diploma in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. This degree is a two year program for students who hold ready hold AA, AS, or AAS degrees. The BSHS trains students on issues impacting the design and deployment of health information systems and basic legal fundamentals of health care and public health.

Salina has 9 years of clinical experience in Cardiac and Vascular Sonography, and 4 years experience in X-ray and CT. She is currently working for a local cardiology firm. Salina finds Medical IT and Informatics an exciting field and hopes to grow with the emerging trends in technology and innovations. She hopes to have the opportunity to be part of the team that brings healthcare into the age of health information technology and universal electronic health records. George Goehring, a Senior in the Computer Science program at UWF, was also recognized for his achievements with a $1000 scholarship from ITGULFCOAST. George became interested in computers in high school where he took a few classes in computer programming. During his senior year in high school he had the opportunity to work at a local military base writing programs. After graduating from HS, he attended Gulf Coast Community College and obtained an Associates of Applied Science in Computer Engineering Technology. During that time George worked for the Technology department as a system administrator. George worked as an IT Specialist for Baptist Hospital and an Internet Support Representative for a local telecommunications company before going back to school for his Bachelors Degree in Computer Science. He works as a Network Administrator and Teaching Assistant at UWF while he completes his senior year. George plans to pursue a Masters degree in Computer Science at UWF after graduation.

ITGulfCoast.org provides a forum for individuals, business and government to interact about topics related to technology, education and economic development in Northwest Florida. We promote ongoing technical education through regular speaker meetings with topics of current interest to the IT community, and cooperative teambuilding among regional firms providing IT services. Our sponsors provide the funds for our scholarships.
